Beyond Networking: Making Real Connections in Shanghai

Beyond Networking: Making Real Connections in Shanghai

Networking is often seen as just swapping business cards and making quick introductions. But what if it could be something more? What if networking helped build real relationships and a strong community?

That’s exactly what an upcoming event in Shanghai aims to do. Organized with two professional women’s associations—one for French-speaking women , La Ruche  and another, IPWS (International Professional Women’s Society), for English-speaking women—this event is open to everyone but focuses on supporting women in business. It also celebrates International Women’s Day.

A Different Way to Network

This event is different. Unlike traditional networking events, this one is designed to help people connect on a deeper level. It’s about building real connections, not just exchanging names.

The event will start with a keynote speech—this time, I’ll be the speaker— and moves into small, guided conversations. Instead of the usual “What do you do?” you’ll explore deeper questions like, “What was your best networking experience and why?”

The goal isn’t to collect contacts—it’s to understand the person behind the job title. After each round, you’ll switch tables, meeting around ten people by the end. Enough to spark meaningful connections without feeling overwhelmed.

Building a Community, Not Just a Contact List

The goal of this event isn’t just to expand your network—it’s to help you find people you truly connect with. Many professionals, especially women, feel that networking can be awkward or transactional. This event is designed to make it more natural and enjoyable, creating a real support system instead of just another list of names.

I’ll also introduce R.E.D., the HR Leaders Community I’m building, to show how professional networks can grow into powerful communities that create real impact.

A New Way to Network

This event’s format is something more networking events could adopt. With structured conversations, small groups, and personal storytelling, it helps people form genuine relationships instead of just making small talk.

The key takeaway? Networking doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. When it’s done with authenticity, it can be an opportunity to meet like-minded people who will support and inspire you.
