In the times of DEI, these 2 words can be confusing.
Here is how I differentiate them:
Imagine a classroom where every student gets the same pair of shoes.
That’s 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲.
But what if some shoes don’t fit?
𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐲 steps in, ensuring each student gets shoes that fit perfectly, enabling everyone to walk comfortably.
So you can think of 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐲 as a tailor-made 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲.
In the workplace, equality means giving everyone the exact same resources and opportunities.
For instance, every department gets exactly the same budget.
Or the same headcount.
That looks good and well on paper, but it’s a disaster in reality.
Equity means giving those resources to meet each department’s needs, making sure everyone has a fair shot at success.
Maybe the sales’ team has a bigger budget than the finance team?
Equality is a starting point; equity is the pathway to true inclusion. 🌈✨
