On March 27, I had the opportunity to speak at the International Professional Women’s Society (IPWS) event, Thought Activator. This gathering was designed to spark meaningful discussions and foster stronger professional networks. Hosted at The Langham Yangtze Boutique Hotel, the event brought together 30 to 40 inspiring women, creating an enriching experience that encouraged genuine connections and community building.

Breaking the Ice: The Power of Conversation
One of the most impactful aspects of the event was the emphasis on starting conversations with strangers—an essential yet often intimidating part of networking. However, this simple act can lead to new opportunities and lasting professional relationships.
During the session, I shared insights on how to approach networking with authenticity, confidence, and purpose. It’s not just about exchanging business cards but about creating connections that matter.

My Talk: Stop Networking, Start Connecting
In my 45-minute presentation, I focused on practical strategies to foster genuine connections, whether in professional or personal settings. The key takeaways included:
Building Rapport at Networking Events
Creating a lasting impression through authentic engagement and understanding the importance of first impressions.
Asking the Right Questions
Moving beyond small talk and sparking meaningful conversations that lead to deeper relationships.
Community Networking
The value of joining existing communities and the steps to build one from scratch, creating a supportive and empowering environment.

Finding the Community That Aligns with You
Identifying groups that resonate with your values, goals, and interests for a fulfilling networking experience.
Creating Your Own Community
How to build a network from the ground up, defining your mission, attracting like-minded individuals, and ensuring long-term engagement.
Additionally, I shared the R.E.D. initiative—an effort close to my heart. I highlighted how collective efforts can strengthen our support systems and create a more inclusive and empowering community for women.

Thought-Provoking Questions
As part of the event, I encouraged attendees to reflect on their experiences and take actionable steps to foster deeper connections. These questions helped spark some introspection:
- When was the last time you felt like you really belonged to a community or group?
- What small step could you take today to create one more meaningful connection?

The Takeaway: Networking with Purpose
The session wrapped up with a lively discussion on how to cultivate meaningful relationships that go beyond surface-level interactions. Attendees left with actionable steps to enhance their networking experiences, build stronger professional circles, and contribute to a more connected and supportive environment for women.
This event reminded us all that networking isn’t just about expanding our professional reach—it’s about building a community that uplifts and supports each other.
Thank you to everyone who attended! I look forward to more opportunities to connect, collaborate, and continue empowering women through meaningful networks.
