Identifying the Roots of Conflict

The morning kicked off with an exploration of the coaching landscape—a framework that helps leaders identify the root causes behind workplace tension. Participants examined questions like:

  • Is this conflict about unmet expectations?
  • Are role boundaries unclear?
  • Is there a deeper identity or values-based disconnect?

Understanding the “why” behind the conflict enables teams to respond with intention rather than reacting impulsively.

The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Styles: Knowing Your Default

Next, we introduced the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI)—a widely used model that maps out five typical approaches to conflict:

  • Competing
  • Avoiding
  • Accommodating
  • Compromising
  • Collaborating

Each participant identified their default conflict style and reflected on when a shift in strategy might be more effective. The key takeaway? Conflict management isn’t about being soft or aggressive—it’s about flexibility and self-awareness.

Mastering Nonviolent Communication (NVC)

In the afternoon, attention turned to Nonviolent Communication (NVC), a four-step communication process created by Marshall Rosenberg. It helps individuals navigate high-stress conversations with empathy and clarity:

  1. Observation – What did I observe, without interpretation?
  2. Feeling – How do I feel in response?
  3. Need – What underlying need is being unmet
  4. Request – What specific, respectful request can I make?

The group practiced turning reactive language into constructive dialogue, a skill especially crucial for team leaders, educators, and parent-facing roles.

Roleplay with Professional Actors: From Theory to Practice

The highlight of the day? Live roleplay sessions with professional actors. Designed to simulate real workplace tensions, the sessions allowed staff to practice difficult conversations in a safe, supportive environment.

Scenarios included:

  • Overburdened colleagues
  • Unclear responsibilities
  • Passive-aggressive dynamics
  • Friction with external partners or parents
  • Miscommunication between departments

Each scene began with a trigger line—like “Tu sais que je suis débordé(e), tu peux pas juste gérer ça tout(e) seul(e) ?”—and unfolded into an unscripted, emotionally charged exchange. Participants used their new tools in real time, receiving live feedback from facilitators and peers.

“The actors made it real. I was nervous, but now I feel better prepared for actual conversations with colleagues or parents.”
