Workshop: Speak Up Across Cultures for Global Teams

Helping Global Teams Communicate Better

Communication is already hard.

Even when people speak the same language and come from the same background, misunderstandings happen all the time.

Now imagine adding different cultures, communication styles, expectations, and ways of working.

This is one of the biggest challenges multinational companies face today.

Last week, we delivered the first session of our “Speak Up Across Cultures” training program for an international team working closely with German colleagues. The workshop focused on helping participants better understand cultural differences and improve day-to-day collaboration across teams.

Strong International Teams Never Stop Learning

What stood out immediately is that this company already has years of experience working internationally.

The team already has strong foundations, shared processes, and a common understanding of how to collaborate across borders.

But instead of stopping there, they want to go further.

They are investing in strengthening communication habits, improving collaboration, and building even stronger relationships between teams in order to stay highly competitive in a global environment.

This mindset is often what separates good international teams from great ones.

Cross-Cultural Communication Is More Than Language

One of the key discussions during the workshop was the idea that communication challenges are not only about language.

Very often, misunderstandings happen because people:

  • interpret feedback differently
  • approach decision-making differently
  • communicate disagreement differently
  • have different expectations around hierarchy and collaboration

Without awareness, these differences can easily create frustration, confusion, or tension inside international teams.

The workshop created space for participants to explore these differences openly and reflect on how they can adapt their communication style when working across cultures.

Practical Conversations That Build Awareness

Throughout the day, participants shared examples from their own work experiences and discussed practical ways to improve collaboration.

Trainer Sonja, who speaks both German and Chinese fluently, brought valuable cultural insights and real-life examples that helped the team connect theory with everyday business situations.

The discussions were practical, interactive, and grounded in real workplace challenges rather than abstract concepts.

This is especially important in cross-cultural communication training because every company, team, and dynamic is unique.

Why Cross-Cultural Communication Matters

In global organizations, communication is not simply a soft skill.

It directly impacts:

  • Teamwork
  • Trust
  • Employee engagement
  • Collaboration speed
  • and overall business performance

The most successful international companies are often the ones that create environments where people can better understand each other, adapt their communication styles, and work effectively across cultural differences.

We are looking forward to continuing this journey with the team in the coming months through the next sessions of the “Speak Up Across Cultures” program.
