R.E.D. Forum: AI Integration and Expatriate Compensation

Navigating AI integration and Expatriate Packages in Shanghai

From digital transformation to global mobility, HR leaders shared their experiences, challenges, and practical lessons from the field.

Two weeks ago on May 29th, the R.E.D. HR Community came together for another forum.

Bringing HR leaders together to share ideas, discuss challenges, and learn from one another’s experiences.

From the rise of AI to the complexities of retaining and attracting talent across borders, the workplace is changing rapidly, and HR leaders are often at the center of that change.

As always, the conversation was open, honest, and focused on the real issues organizations are facing today.

HR Professionals discussing AI & Expatriate Packages

We all know AI is changing the workplace.

Can you keep up?

One of the biggest topics of the day was Artificial Intelligence. AI is becoming a larger part of everyday work, and many organizations are exploring how to use it effectively. But as the discussion unfolded, it became clear that successful AI adoption is about much more than implementing new technology.

The group shared experiences from their own organizations and discussed common challenges, including employee readiness, digital skills, and managing change. Another key theme was leadership buy-in, as concerns around cost, risk, and long-term impact often influence how quickly organizations move forward.

As one participant put it,

“It’s hard to manage the fancy expectations of leadership with actionable work.”

The comment resonated with members in the room and highlighted the challenge of balancing ambitious AI goals with the practical realities of implementation. While there are still many questions to answer, there was agreement that the long-term benefits make the effort worthwhile, particularly for organizations looking to stay competitive in an increasingly digital world.

Finding the Right Balance

While AI has the potential to improve efficiency and automate certain tasks, the conversation repeatedly returned to the importance of keeping people at the center of the workplace.

Skills like critical thinking, communication and leadership remain essential, even as technology continues to evolve.

We agreed that AI should be used to support employees, helping them work smarter and focus on the areas where human judgment and collaboration matter most.

Our Conversation on Expats

How do we support global talent?

The forum also explored the challenges of supporting expatriate employees and managing compensation across different countries. As organizations continue hiring and relocating talent internationally, HR leaders are being asked to balance fairness, employee expectations, and business needs.

The discussion covered topics such as housing support, tax differences, compensation currency, and salary structures. One particularly interesting conversation focused on net-to-net compensation, an approach that helps employees maintain a similar level of take-home pay regardless of where they are based. Members shared practical examples of how their organizations approach expatriate compensation and support global talent.

Learning Through Shared Experience

One of the most valuable aspects of the R.E.D. Forum is the opportunity to learn from others facing similar challenges. By sharing experiences, perspectives, and lessons learned, members gain practical insights that go beyond theory.

These conversations continue to make the R.E.D. community a valuable space for HR leaders to learn, reflect, and navigate the changing world of work together.
